Lesson 7

Students will use base 10 blocks to show regrouping of decimals. They will work with a peer to make up 2 digit decimals and add them together to show the class. Students will write the problem and explain using academic vocabulary to solve.

Lesson 7

Performance Objective 7:
Given 10 problems, involving decimals, to the hundredths place value, multiplied by single digit numbers, students will identify appropriate method of solving and solve by regrouping with place value, solving 7 correctly.

Title:  Multiplication of Decimals

Lesson Overview:
Students will use base 10 blocks to show regrouping of decimals. They will work with a peer to make up 2 digit decimals and add them together to show the class. Students will write the problem and explain using academic vocabulary to solve.

Resources or Materials Needed
  • Ipad, smart board, computer, Youtube video showing 3 different ways of multiplying decimals, Lined paper, Youtube Videos

 Lesson Objectives
Given 10 problems containing a number with decimals to the tenths place value and whole number, to multiply together, students will identify the need, complete and show regrouping in writing, solving 7 correctly.

Time 60 minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities
Students will be grouped by conceptual understanding in the prior lesson. One strong and one with extra prompts needed. Each pair will discuss prior lesson’s objective and if they feel they met it. A review of multiplication and how multiplication of whole numbers is solved. Students will practice solving multiplication of whole numbers with their peer partner, on the iPad.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Teacher will present students with the opportunity to share decimals and whole numbers on the Smartboard. Teacher will use one of each to show students 3 ways of solving, using 3 videos from Youtube, showing each way. Teacher will show students using virtual 100’s block, repeat addition, and standard algorithm. Virtual one hundreds blocks will be brought up on iPad by students. Students will be walked through how to show a decimal using the one hundreds blocks. They will then be showed how repeat addition of decimals is the same as whole number multiplication. They will then be shown standard algorithm multiplication and the placement the decimal upon completion of the multiplication problem.

Step 3: Learner Participation
Using the given resources, students will work with their partner to create and solve a multiplication problem, which includes a decimal and a whole number. They will then choose a method to solve and solve. Once team has solved the problem, they will share with their table group. Teacher will choose a random example from the pool of problems produced in the classroom, project the problem from the iPad onto the Smartboard and have the class solve individually. They will then take turns and explain the steps they took to solve the problem by projecting their work onto the Smartboard.

Step 4: Assessment

Students will be given 10 multiplication problems that include a decimal to the hundredths place value and a whole number to complete independently.
Formative assessments will be completed as teacher circulated assessments throughout the lesson and pair work.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Students will be given the opportunity to share with their table group how they choose to solve their multiplication problems.
