Given 5 word problems containing decimals, students use academic vocabulary to identify method of solving and complete the addition of decimals, solving 4 correctly.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Students will be grouped by conceptual understanding in the prior lesson. One strong and one with extra prompts needed. Each pair will discuss addition of decimals objective. Students will practice making 2 two digit decimals and adding them together, using regrouping and academic vocabulary, on the iPad.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Step 2: Content Presentation

Students will be presented with a word problem from the text that requires addition of money. The teacher will explain how the money is decimal form and is solved in the same manner as other decimals. Location of the academic language in the word problem will be discussed and a list of additional key words will be compiled onto the Smartboard.

Step 3: Learner Participation

Students will discuss in pairs and explain the information how they understand it to the group. Students will take the information provided and attempt to correctly solve the problem with their peer partner. The students will then explain the process they used with their table groups.

Students will review the 5 questions from the iPad and solve, independently on their lined paper.

Formative assessments will be completed as teacher circulated assessments throughout the lesson and pair work.

Students will explain and review their answers with their peers. Corrections can be discussed and questions will be answered by table group. Teacher will be available as needed.
