Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Students will be grouped by conceptual understanding in the prior lesson. One strong and one with extra prompts needed. Each pair will discuss prior lesson’s objective and if they feel they met it. Students will challenge each other with regrouping two decimals, by subtracting them together, to engage students and activate prior knowledge.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Step 2: Content Presentation

Students will be asked to provide 2-two decimal numbers, and show them on the iPad as the teacher chooses the correct number. Teacher will show each number in word form and base 10 form, on the Smartboard. Teacher will explain that in order to subtract the numbers they must regroup by breaking the place-value into 10s and moving them to the lower place-value, by showing students on a projection.

Step 3: Learner Participation

Step 3: Learner Participation

Students will be given manipulatives and work with a peer to attempt to solve the problem provided to the whole class. The problem will then be explained by each pair to the other students in the grouping of 4 at the table. Students will provide each other with 2 digit decimal problems to solve. Students will record the new problems and steps used to solve the problems on their lined paper. Each pair will be given the opportunity to share a problem with the class, by projecting the iPad work onto the Smartboard. The class will record the problem of students presenting and assist with solving orally.

Step 4: Assessment

Step 4: Assessment

Students will all be given 10 two digit decimal subtraction problems to solve independently, on their lined paper.

Formative assessments will be completed as teacher observation assessments throughout the lesson and pair work.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Students will trade papers and discuss their work with a peer for additional support and clarification.
