Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Students will be grouped by conceptual understanding in the prior lesson. One strong and one with extra prompts needed. Each pair will discuss prior lesson’s objective and if they feel they met it. Students will challenge each other with identifying decimals to engage students and activate prior knowledge.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Step 2: Content Presentation

Students will be asked to provide 2 two decimal numbers, and present them on the iPad. Teacher will show each number in word form and using virtual fill in 100s blocks. Teacher will explain that in order to add the numbers together they must regroup and start a new line, once they fill in the ten in each line.

Step 3: Learner Participation

Step 3: Learner Participation

Students will be given a problem with 2 two-decimal numbers. They will open virtual 100s blocks and work with a peer to attempt to solve the problem. The problem will then be explained by each pair to the other students in the group of 4 students at the table. Students will then provide each other with 2 digit decimal problems to solve. Students will record the new problems and steps used to solve the problems on their lined paper. Each pair will be given the opportunity to share a problem with the class, by projecting their work onto the Smartboard. The class will record the problem of students presenting and assist with solving orally.

Step 4: Assessment

Step 4: Assessment

Students will all be given 10 two-digit decimal addition problems to solve independently, on their lined paper.

Formative assessments will be completed as teacher circulated assessments throughout the lesson and pair work.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Students will trade papers and discuss their work with a peer for additional support and clarification.
